FROM ZERO TO PROJECT MANAGER: HOW I “FELL” INTO DIGITAL AND HAVE NO REGRETS

Illustration

Have you ever dreamed of starting from scratch and dropping everything? I didn't. It just happened that way. My path to becoming a project manager at a digital marketing agency didn't start with courses or “strategic planning.” It starts with the word... “oops.”
Today, I want to share my story. It's about how I, with no experience, ended up in a world of deadlines, technical tasks, and “can you do this by yesterday?”. And you know what? It was one of the best decisions of my life.

MY “BEFORE”: NORMAL WORK AND AN UNEXPECTED OFFER

Like many others, I had a “stable” job. Everything was fine, but something was missing. The feeling that I was standing still gradually ate away at me. I was looking for something to occupy myself with, and it seems that the universe heard me. Or maybe it just got tired of my “maybe I should...”

I decided to write to a friend with whom I used to play soccer in the past—it turned out that we were born on the same day and in the same year! This friend is Yevgen, the CEO of the Osadchiy Agency, a digital marketing agency where I now work. I asked him to teach me how to be a targetologist. But then something unexpected happened: a project manager position opened up on the team. Instead of teaching me about targeting, he suggested I try something completely different. I didn't even know what that was, but I googled it. It turned out to be a person who helps the team create projects, turning chaos into order. It sounded like “some kind of magic,” but what did I have to lose?

MY “AFTER”: CHAOS, GROWTH, AND DAILY DISCOVERIES

Yes, I joined a small but very dynamic digital team. The first few days were like Alice in Wonderland, where instead of the Cheshire Cat, there was a marketer, instead of a caterpillar, there was a designer, and deadlines lurked around every corner.

My main task was to synchronize the team so that everyone was moving in the same direction. Even if it meant “effective nudging” and a bunch of “What if...” questions. I realized that the most important thing in the work of a project manager is not how much you know, but how well you can listen, negotiate, and... stay calm.

ADVICE FOR THOSE AT A CROSSROADS

If you feel that your work has become routine, don't be afraid to look for something new. My story is proof that you don't have to be a “guru” from day one. The important thing is to be willing to learn, be flexible, and not be afraid of change.

Sometimes the biggest “oops” can be the start of something big. Who knows, maybe your “oops” is waiting for you right now. Give it a try!

If the human qualities of the team that will lead your business to success are important to you, then the Osadchiy Agency team will be happy to work with you.
